Salary: £14.96 p/hr + 15% shift enhancement

Temporary role: initial contract until 31/03/2022, 37hrs per week.

Shift work: Morning & Evening shifts including weekends, alternating.

Job description

The molecular biology team based at the Ada Lovelace Building, is part of the Monitoring Laboratories group which sits in OPSRMC National Monitoring and is recruiting for Grade 4 Molecular Biology Scientists.
The Ada Lovelace Building Laboratory is at Exeter Science Park.

The Molecular biology team are tasked with supplying the government with data from the analysis of wastewater for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus. The scope of the current testing has increased to enable monitoring of 80% of the British population.

Due to the short timeframe the role is ideally suited to someone who can exploit their existing method development experience, alongside their knowledge and expertise of molecular biology for work with this variable matrix.

The successful candidate will be required to work with colleagues at the Ada Lovelace Building, Exeter Science Park to deliver the required analysis and data.

The team

The team comprises of a Technical Specialist, overseeing the development of new and innovative work. Grade 4 Scientists who also oversee the day to day running of the section, and supervise the team to ensure training and quality issues are dealt with in a timely manner. Grade 3 Senior Assistant Scientists whose main task is to supervise and train the Grade 2 Assistant Scientists.

Experience/skills required

A suitable candidate will need the following attributes: -
• Experience in end-point and quantitative PCR, nucleic acid extraction and problem solving complex molecular workflows.
• Knowledge and experience of data analysis (designing and using automated scripts), and of liquid handling robots.
• Be a confident communicator and trainer who can ensure safe working practices within a team with a variety of experience and expertise.
• Be able to draw upon knowledge from a range of expert sources in the field of molecular biology.
• A good understanding of laboratory facilities and the challenges of delivering analytical capability in an environmentally friendly and operationally effective way.
• Experience of time keeping and working to a budget.

Additional information  

These roles will require you to work flexibly across the weekends and afternoon and evening shifts for a 37 hour week.
Weekend working attracts an enhancement of 0.5 time.


*This role is not suitable for recent graduates with no working experience.
