Applications Scientist - Downstream Processing in Wales South

Our client is a world leader in resin-based separation, purification and extraction technologies providing innovative solutions to global pharmaceutical, power, hydrometallurgy, electronics, ground water and Life Sciences industries.

Their Life Sciences business is a rapidly growing division employing state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities to support applications in the production of vital medicines, nutraceuticals, foods, beverages and cosmetics.

Due to continued success in this field they are seeking an Applications Scientist to work with one of their modern agarose-based resins which has been designed specifically for use in the purification of monoclonal antibodies.

Role

You will join a team providing both internal and external expertise in column chromatography and downstream processing of biopharmaceuticals. The ideal candidate will be well skilled in downstream protein purification by column chromatography and associated impurities analysis (ELISA, HPLC, UV/vis).

The role involves managing complex projects and working closely with customers, management, sales and other research/technical staff, with regular reporting in both oral and written formats. The role also involves writing papers for scientific publications with the potential for presenting at industry-relevant conferences globally. Additionally, the role may involve international travel to support customers and the commercial team.

Candidate

PhD, MSc or BSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry or related subject.

Comprehensive knowledge or experience of downstream process development including relevant analytical assays (electrophoresis, ELISA, HPLC).

Experience in the use and testing of chromatography resins including extensive use of AKTA instruments.

Experience in method development.

Able to write scientific and technical reports with a proven track record of scientific publications.

Exceptional oral communication skills, happy to present to a wide audience.

Able to handle hazardous chemicals safely according to documented H&S processes.

Competent is the use of MS Office, project management tools, scientific computer software including DoE.

Desirable knowledge

Knowledge of upstream processing in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Experience in large scale column packing.

Experience in virus purification.
